A new Spanish glossary of educational terms related to the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is now available online. The glossary is the result of the collective and collaborative efforts of 18 Parent Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). It was developed to ensure that IDEA terms used in documents for parents are translated in a uniform and comprehensible way across states, geographical regions, and communities of Spanish speakers.

Autism Awareness Makes a Difference

Mounting evidence suggests that the impairments of autism -- including deficits in speech, IQ, and social skills -- can be tempered or even reversed if therapy is started early.

Use story time to build your child's reading skills!

To an onlooker, the activities Emma Moyer suggests you try when reading to emerging readers just seem like fun, but they will help you build children's critical reading skills.

Ms. Moyer, a second grade teacher and certified reading specialist in Virginia, has started a colorful blog featuring selected books and specific tips you can use to solidify young readers' skills. Ms. Moyer has her M.Ed. in Reading and uses Phonemic Awareness in Young Children as her "go-to resource" for the activities she recommends in her blog.

The activities are presented to parents but they are easily adaptable and equally useful for early childhood educators.

College prep for students with ASD

Summer Advance 2011: Be Ready for College is available for 10-12 students between the ages of 17 - 23 who plan to attend or are attending college. Students must be at least a high school junior and taking a college preparatory course load in anticipation of being accepted as a student at UCO or other Oklahoma college. The program will be offered at the University of Central Oklahoma beginning on Sunday, June 26 at 3 PM through Tuesday, June 28 at noon.

Lots of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders plan to attend college. But sometimes, the college experience can be very difficult. Many times students are expected to be aware of information that is not reviewed by instructors or advisers. Summer Advance 2011 is designed to prepare students for the college experience and address the challenges that students often experience.

Summer Advance provides the information that all college students are expected to know when they arrive on campus in the fall. Some of the experiences that students will enjoy include: a social experience to get to know other classmates and mentors, staying in a residence hall, experiencing a college class, scavenger hunt to learn the campus, "College Concepts"--such as what is a 3-hour class, a syllabus, what to do when you get sick, etc. In addition, we will visit the Wellness Center, eat at the Nigh Center, visit the Library, and learn how to find the resources you need while attending college. Students will be assigned peer mentors (upperclassman and graduate students) and there will be supervision for the overnight experience. .

Parents will also participate! There will be financial sessions and social experiences to get to know other parents. These sessions are scheduled for Sunday, June 26 from 3-7 PM and on Monday, June 27 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.

If you believe people on the Waiting List have been without services long enough, please contact the elected officials listed below Also circulate this to others who want to help. When you contact the officials:

Call first and then write a follow-up e-mail reminding them of your concerns and wishes! This is important! Do NOT just send an e-mail or call. DO BOTH! (Anyone can call. If they have a loved one on the Waiting List, if they have a friend or if they or their child is on the Waiting list)

1. Give your name, address and phone number.
2. Tell them why people on the waiting list are important to you.
3. Ask them to redirect funds from state institutions to community based services.

Why should funds be redirected?
1. There are currently over 6,050 people who area waiting for services, some who have been waiting for over six years. NONEof them are waiting for, nor want, services at a state institution. We could provide the services Oklahoma families want and save tax dollars at the same time.

2. Oklahoma tax payers would save money. Developmental Disabilities Services Division of the Department of Human Services estimates that moving the approximately 239 individuals at state institutions into the community will provide a savings of $40,000 per year, per client – and will, additionally, reduce other necessary budget allocations for the physical plants.

3. Oklahoma could provide more services. Providing home and community based services in Oklahoma costs an average of $376/day. The Developmental Disabilities Services Division of the Department of Human Services estimates that the daily rate to serve clients in state institutions is $505/day - a difference of $127/day. In other words, if two people from state institutions were moved into community based services, we could take one person off the Waiting List.

4. Caregivers could return to work, reducing welfare programs and boosting tax revenue. Because many people on the Waiting List require 24/7 care, families are forced to make decisions that drive them into poverty. Parents leave employment to provide care, relegating them to a destitute status. Thousands who, with proper training and support, could be employed and be paying taxes, are not. Single-parent-families become full-time caregivers, dependent upon social programs for their income. Military families and others who seek or need to maintain employment must reject assignments and possible promotions.

5. Currently the Federal Government is providing financial incentives to move people from state institutions. By utilizing the “Money Follows the Person” program, we would receive 82.45% in federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP) funds for the first year a person transitions from an institution to community based care, instead of the 64.9% we will receive beginning July 1, 2011. This incentive continues through 2015.

Parents are encouraged to take part in the National IDEA Survey going on now!

The survey will examine whether parents are treated as equal partners in their children’s education. We ask questions about whether the rights of students with disabilities and their parents protected throughout the special education process, including IEP meetings, decisions about special education, evaluations and eligibility, and Due Process and Impartial Hearings. We also ask about inclusion and whether children with disabilities receive the education they need, or whether they are deprived of important services. We will be using your answers to compile a report about the experiences of parents and children with disabilities and these issues.

All types of disabilities are of interest and there are different surveys for groups such as:

** Parents whose child was denied services

TSA has recently announced the use of TSA Medical Notification Cards. This is for use by individuals with medical conditions or disabilities that makes the typical security check a challenge. Would your child like a letter from Santa in Braille?

Between November 15 and December 20, parents can go online at www.nfb.org and fill out a Santa Braille Letter request form. The form can also be printed and faxed to (410) 685-2340. Beginning December 1, the Braille letters from Santa will start going out to boys and girls around the country. The Braille letter will also be accompanied by a print copy (for mom and dad to read), and parents can choose the contracted or uncontracted form of Braille for the letter. Requests for letters must include the writer’s name, the child’s name, birthday, gender, mailing address, and a telephone number or e-mail address in case Santa’s helpers at the National Federation of the Blind have questions.

NEW SUPPORT GROUP FOR ADULTS SIBLINGS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

OKSIBS will host two Adult Sibling Support Group meetings in January for adult siblings, age 18 and up, who are siblings of persons with disabilities.
The informal support group will meet on Saturday, January 8th at 10:00am at the Child Study Center located at 1100 NE 13th Street in Oklahoma City. Another meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 18th at 7:00pm at the same location. The meetings will be to discuss what services and supports are needed for adult siblings in Oklahoma and how best to deliver those services.

If you are an adult sibling of a person with a disability and would like to meet other adult siblings and provide your input into services and supports for adult siblings, please make plans to attend one or both of the meetings in January.

The OKSIBS is a collaborative initiative funded by the Oklahoma Developmental Disabilities Council and sponsored by Sooner Success, a program of the Child Study Center at OUHSC Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Section. How is life different for adults living with developmental disabilities?

How is life different for families and the millions of adults living with a developmental disability in this country? That's what Easter Seals wanted to find out. Thanks to the generous support of MassMutual Financial Group, we worked with Harris Interactive to conduct our Living with Disabilities Study.

In every measure of comparison, parents of adult children with disabilities had significantly higher levels of concern for their children than parents of adult children without disabilities -- yet services and support for these families and adults living with disability are few and far between.

The study results paint a startling picture of these families’ life-long challenges surrounding everyday life and future concerns for parents of adult children with disabilities and adults with disabilities. Many parents worry their adult children’s basic needs for employment, housing, transportation, social interactions, recreation, healthcare and financial security will not be met:

• Only 11% of parents of adult children with disabilities report their child is employed full time.

• Just 6 in 10 parents of adult children with a disability rate their child’s quality of life as excellent or good (61%), compared to 8 in 10 parents of adults without a disability (82%).

• Huge gaps exist in parents of adults with disabilities’ assessment of their child’s ability to manage their own finances (34% vs. 82% parents of adults without disabilities) and have the life skills necessary to live independently (30% vs. 83% parents of adults without disabilities).

• Nearly 7 in 10 adults with disabilities (69%) live with their parent(s) or guardian; only 17% live independently -- compared to more than half of adult children without disabilities (51%).

Easter Seals will use these findings to raise awareness of and advocate for the life-long services families desperately need -- working to lessen these disparities and bridge the gap for the many people living with developmental disabilities.

Swim program for students with ASD

The YMCA Swim Program for Children with ASD is looking for new students!

Here's how the program works:

1. Interested parents contact the Enid YMCA at 580-237-4645 and set up an appointment with Kathi Black or Kim Haley. This is a great time for parents to arrange to observe a current class.

2. Together they determine the individual needs of the child (what supports the child will need, how their autism is presenting itself and how that impacts their ability to enjoy the water, and what goals the family has for their child & swimming).

3. The family selects a class time (Classes are 30 minutes long and are scheduled on Tuesday & Thursday evenings at 5:45; 6:15; 6:45; and 7:15 p.m.)

Students can be any age and have any type of autism spectrum disorder. The program is open to both YMCA members and non-members. Cost for 8 lessons is $35 for YMCA members and $50 for non-members.

Parents who would like to talk with a family already in the swim program are welcome to contact Theresa Sharp at 977-7479.

It is a wonderful asset to our community to have swim instructors specifically trained to assist students with autism spectrum disorders. Please encourage families interested in swimming to take advantage of this program!

The Oklahoma Autism Network will be presenting Everyday Intervention, on Tuesday, September 21, 2010,in Enid, Oklahoma. This training is designed for families and professionals. Research has shown that children with Autism Spectrum Disorders benefit from repeated opportunities to practice new skills across a variety of settings. In this training, we will discuss how families can use everyday routines to maximize their child's opportunities for learning.

Disney has already patented and licensed the technology for the handheld device, which could serve a wide variety of retail, commercial and industrial applications. He has worked for 35 years in children’s mental health and is a consultant on alternative education. He is currently a faculty member for the Sanctuary Institute and coordinator of the NYS DJJOY/ Sanctuary initiative.

Bully Free Program Train-the-Trainers in June

Many Oklahoma schools use the Bully Free program and Dr. Allan Beane is coming back to Oklahoma in June, for a training of trainers. There is a fee and contact info below.

He will be in Oklahoma City on June 2-4. 2010. The key to establishing an ongoing and effective anti-bullying program in a cost-effective manner is for each school or school system to have its own trainers and consultants or to have such individuals near their location.

The Bully Free Program (Preschool through High School) is the most comprehensive program available. It reduces bullying, reduces suspensions, reduces behavior problems, reduces expulsions, increases school attendance, increases end of grade test scores, and much more.

Who should attend?
School system employees who have a passion to prevent bullying and who can provide quality training may attend. The training is appropriate for all grade levels. Some districts may prefer to send more than one person (i.e., one person from each school, etc.).

What do trainers receive through the training?
The workshop participants will receive three days of intense training in the implementation of the Bully Free Program, a training manual (Bullying Prevention for Schools - A Step-by-Step Guide to Implementing a Successful Anti-Bullying Program by Allan L. Beane, Ph.D.), Bully Free Program PowerPoint training presentations and handouts to facilitate their training efforts, access to over one-hundred Microsoft Word files on the website (www.bullyfree.com), a variety of follow-up services, and other free resources from the Bully Free Program to jump start their efforts.

Who will provide the training?
Dr. Allan Beane is an internationally recognized expert, author and speaker on bullying. He is the founder and President of Bully Free Systems, LLC and developer of The Bully Free Program that has been adopted by schools and districts around the United States. The Oklahoma Department of Education is currently piloting the Bully Free Program at eleven school sites. His son was bullied in seventh grade and high
school. He died ten years ago. His son's life inspired him to write his first book, The Bully Free Classroom. This book is a best seller and is in ten languages. He is the author of six published anti-bullying books and several other materials and resources. Dr. Beane has over thirty-seven years of experience in education and has served as an expert and consultant in five criminal cases and six lawsuits involving bullying. He and materials from The Bully Free Program have been featured in USA Today, USA Weekend, Time for Kids, and Newsweek for Teens, and many other national magazines and journals. Music Event in Stillwater - Performers on the Rise

Performers on the Rise ..... special event to benefit Mya Gonzales Foundation and Rise School

The Oklahoma Music Therapists Association, Oklahoma State University Department of Music, the Mya Gonzales Foundation and OSU Greek Life will present Performers on the Rise at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 11 in the Seretean Center for Performing Arts on the OSU Campus. Proceeds from the benefit concert will go to the Mya Gonzales Foundation which provides support for the Rise School which is part of the Human Development and Family Science Department in the College of Human Environmental Sciences.

The concert will feature a variety of performers including an internationally known New York City tenor, performers from Triple C Music Therapy, OSU music department vocalists, orchestra and drum line, the Oklahoma All-State Honor Choir, and dancers from the New York City Ballet and Stillwater’s Encore Dance Studio.

Stillwater music therapist Robbin Buford who is directing the production says the concert will incorporate musicians with disabilities as well as typically developing and professional musicians ranging from young children to adults.

A reception will be held in the Conoco-Phillips OSU Alumni Center immediately following the concert. A silent auction, music therapy exhibits, and painting demonstrations by children with autism are also planned for the event.

“We are very excited to be able to showcase the impact music therapy can have on individuals with special needs,” Buford said. “Concert guests will be able to experience collaboration between performers with disabilities, professional musicians, choreographers and theater directors in a public performance of the highest production standards.”

Rise School Director Rachel Stallings has seen the benefits music therapy has on children with disabilities.

“Music reaches students in ways other methods of learning can’t,” Stallings said. “They become more expressive and involved during the music therapy sessions. Their progress is accelerated because of the music therapy.”

Mya Gonzales Foundation Chair Scott Jones said Performers on the Rise will not only be entertaining but educational as well.

“The Mya Gonzales Foundation supports children with special needs and their families. Performers on the Rise will showcase the amazing accomplishments of these special children,” Jones said. “The proceeds from the concert, will allow the foundation to continue its financial support to the families and the Rise School for music and other special therapies.”

Young Children with Cerebral Palsy, Arthrogryposis or Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Did you know that children with severe cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis, spinal muscular atrophy and other disorders whose limited mobility prevents them from exploring their environment may be at risk for delays in how they learn, communicate, socialize and cope?

We are doing a research study with young children with such conditions. The study will explore the effects of battery-operated wheelchairs on the development and functional skills of children when compared to similar children who do not receive the intervention.

Requirements: Participants must be 14- to 30-months of age, must be unable to walk, must have adequate vision and hearing, and must have the ability to learn to use a battery-operated wheelchair.

Many people don't realize there is currently no certification process for advocates. But there is good training available. And you do need to understand the process and the regulations to be an effective advocate.

The mission of the U.S. Department of Education is to promote student achievement by encouraging educational excellence as well as equal access to educational opportunities. The Department of Education is involved in establishing federal financial aid policies, collecting data on America’s schools, and prohibiting discrimination.

The Office for Civil Rights (an arm of the Department of Education)publishes a pamphlet, called Students with Disabilities Preparing for Postsecondary Education: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities, that explains the rights and responsibilities of students with disabilities as they prepare to continue their education past high school.

The website where this pamphlet is available also contains a number of questions and answers that a student in your community may be interested in as they get ready to make the transition to post-secondary education.

New study unravels mystery of Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a common, language-based learning disability that makes it difficult to read, spell, and write. It is unrelated to a person's intelligence. Studies have also shown that patients with dyslexia can have a hard time hearing when there is a lot of background noise, but the reasons for this haven't been exactly clear.

Now, scientists at Northwestern University say that in dyslexia, the part of the brain that helps perceive speech in a noisy environment is unable to fine-tune or sharpen the incoming signals.

H1N1 Vaccine Available To All Oklahomans

Effective: November 17, 2009

State health officials announced today that all Oklahomans who want to reduce their risk of H1N1 infection are now eligible to receive H1N1 influenza vaccine. While vaccine supplies remain limited, demand from priority groups has dipped to a point where all Oklahomans can begin to receive vaccine.

“While we continue to emphasize the importance of vaccination for the priority groups, especially children and pregnant women, we are going to begin to vaccinate the general population today,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Kristy Bradley. “Vaccination continues to be the best way to protect yourself from the H1N1 flu and slow the spread of this pandemic. H1N1 influenza activity has been widespread in Oklahoma since early September and even though statewide monitoring has recently shown a decline in influenza-linked hospitalizations, this virus is expected to circulate throughout the winter months. The possibility also exists that another surge of H1N1 flu may follow the current one.”

Since September 1, 890 Oklahomans have been hospitalized due to complications from influenza and 27 persons have died. Ninety percent of the H1N1-related deaths have been persons less than 65 years old. This finding contrasts significantly with seasonal flu which tends to cause the greatest proportion of deaths among persons older than 65 years. The best protection against getting the flu is to receive both the vaccine for H1N1 flu and seasonal flu.

Oklahomans seeking the H1N1 vaccine are encouraged to check with their physician’s office or county health department. The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) expects an additional 90,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine to be delivered to the state this week. The doses include both nasal spray and injectable vaccines. Supplies remain limited and the state expects to continue to receive vaccine through January.

For more information about the availability of H1N1 influenza vaccine in your area, call your local county health department or visit www.health.ok.gov. The Oklahoma State Department of Health toll-free H1N1 hotline is 1-866-278-7134. Phones are answered Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

OICA 2010 Agenda & Follow Up Meeting

The OICA 2010 Legislative Agenda for Children and Youth was developed by over 500 advocates attending the Annual Fall Forum sponsored by the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy.

Four issues were prioritized by the group:

* Require health education
* Support efforts to provide health coverage for autism
* Address the needs of children of incarcerated parents
* Support a tobacco-free Oklahoma

All are welcome at the follow up event
In order to develop our strategies for advancing these important issues, OICA will host a follow-up event at the State Capitol on November 13.

1: LAMP: Language Acquisition Through Motor Planning ¬ John Halloran
This presentation discusses the use of sensory rich activities and augmentative communication to increase an individual¹s capacity for successful AAC device usage and spontaneous language production. It explores the correlation between the improved capacity for motor planning and the ability to use language, along with the necessary elements of effective therapy.

Videotaped materials of therapy sessions will illustrate how sensory integration can facilitate communication devices and, in some cases, natural speech. The videotaped material will include John working with students who have autism. Handout materials will focus on the practical aspects of therapy. Vocabulary appropriate for use with nonverbal children with autism will be explained in terms of traditional word usage models from language development studies.

2: Power To Go: Using power mobility to support children and adults with severe motor impairments ¬ Maria Jones

This course will provide an overview of the history of power mobility. Discussion topics will include who uses power mobility and how much, perceived and actual barriers to power mobility, and effects (or potential effects) of power mobility on children's development. The course will also discuss how to assess for and teach children and adults to use power mobility.

White House encourages agencies to hire people with disabilities

For the first time, the White House is strongly recommending contractors and grantees join agencies in providing more employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

President Obama kicked off National Disability Employment Awareness Month by detailing several initiatives the federal government will lead.

"Across this country, millions of people with disabilities are working or want to work, and they should have access to the support and services they need to succeed," the President says in a statement. "As the nation's largest employer, the federal government and its contractors can lead the way by implementing effective employment policies and practices that increase opportunities and help workers achieve their full potential. We must also rededicate ourselves to fostering an inclusive work culture that welcomes the skills and talents of all qualified employees. That's why I've asked the responsible agencies to develop new plans and policies to help increase employment across America for people with disabilities." .

Autism Affects 1 In 91 Children

Michelle Diament of The Disability Scoop recently published this dramatic new statistic released by CDC researchers:

Autism affects 1 in 91 children in the United States, government data published Monday shows, marking a dramatic increase over the previous estimate of 1 in 150.

The research published in the journal Pediatrics comes from a 2007 telephone survey of over 78,000 parents who were asked if they had ever been told by a health care provider that their child had an autism spectrum disorder.

Results from the survey show about 673,000 children diagnosed with autism, bringing the rate to 1 in 91 children, according to researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration who jointly conducted the survey.

For people with various disabilities which make speech difficult, including cerebral palsy, autism, Parkinson's Disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and others, the key to effective communication is "Augmentative and Alternative Communication", or AAC for short. AAC refers to methods that make communication easier for people who find it hard to communicate by speech. These methods include electronic talking aids, computers, books and boards with pictures, letters, words, or phrases, and sign language. AAC can help people to communicate more effectively at any time, in any place, with anyone, and about anything.

Unfortunately, many people who need AAC do not get the training and assistance that they need to use AAC everywhere in their daily lives. Many times families, friends, and teachers are not familiar with AAC or mistakenly assume that the person cannot benefit. As a result, people with limited or no speech may spend many days or years unable to communicate their needs, feelings, hopes and dreams.
